York Arts & Antiques Week is a celebration of York's arts and antiques heritage presented by the Museums of Old York and the York Art Association, in collaboration with the York Public Library, Historic New England's Sayward Wheeler House and local arts and antiques businesses. This collaborative event will feature a range of programs highlighting our museums, art galleries, public library and antiques shops. Sunday, September 7th through Saturday, September 13, 2008. These featured events are the very hallmark of York Arts & Antiques Week and showcase the various nonprofit partners involved in the celebration.
Museums of Old York: Old York Antiques Show
The inaugural antiques show at the Museums of Old York will take place September 12-13,2008. The event will feature 20 of America's top antiques dealers, including W.M. Schwind, Jr., Jonathan Trace, Hollis Broderick and Sharon Platt of the Antiquarium, James and Nancy Glazer and Fiske & Freeman. The Antiques Show will highlight exceptional silverand brass, furniture, paintings, ceramics, jewelry, oriental rugs and art, nautical items, textiles, folk and decorative art, prints and books. Proceeds from the show support the museum’s education, outreach and curatorial programs, which serve over 20,000 children and families each year. The Old York Antiques Show will take place at the Remick Barn, 3 Lindsay Road in YorkVillage and runs Friday, September 12, and Saturday, September 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $10 for the Antiques Show or $15 for both the Antiques Show and museum. York Art Association: Art in the Park
The York Art Association’s Art in the Park will feature fine arts and crafts by the region’s best artists, including Denis Leblanc, Gloria Gustafson, Mimi Carpenter, Gerald Robillard and Judith Baker. Museums of Old York: Antiques Show Preview Party
The Old York Antiques Show will begin with an elegant preview party on Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Remick Barn, 3 Lindsay Road in York Village. Guests will have an exclusive preview of dealer booths and the first opportunity to purchase antiques while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Tickets for the preview party are $75. Patrons who donate $125 will be recognized at the event and invited to a private dinner following the Preview Party. George Marshall Store Gallery: Gary Haven Smith & Connie Hayes
Join us for the opening reception of two exhibitions at the George Marshall Store Gallery. The main level gallery will host New Hampshire sculptor Gary Haven Smith's Recent Work. Gary's choice of materials and sensitive application of incised patterns, patinas and polished surfaces are tied to his love and respect for the New England landscape. The dock level gallery will feature Connie Hayes' Small Pastels, an exhibition of almost thirty new pastel paintings focusing on familiar local sights. Museums of Old York: Early New England Ceramics
Join the Museums of Old York for this special afternoon tea, a part of the museum's inaugural Antiques Show! Emerson Baker, Professor of History at Salem State College, will present a look at Early New England Ceramics at the Elizabeth Bishop Perkisn Boathouse. Following the program, join us for a tour and tea on the porch of this riverside estate. Friday, September 12th from 2:00 ~ 3:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth Bishop Perkins Boathouse. $35 includes lecture, afternoon tea, tour and admission to the Antiques Show. Seating limited to 18. York Public Library: Collecting, Buying and Enjoying Fine Art
Rose Safran, local author and arts writer, and Mary Harding, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museums of Old York's George Marshall Store Gallery, will lead a conversation on Collecting, Buying and Enjoying Fine Art. Museums of Old York: Colonial Era Furniture of Southern Maine
Join the Museums of Old York for this special luncheon program, a part of the museum's inaugural Antiques Show! Thomas B. Johnson, Curator of Collections at Canterbury Shaker Village, presents a special program for lovers of antique furniture. The program starts at the Elizabeth Bishop Perkisn Boathouse with a boxed luncheon and discussion of the history of Southern Maine furniture. From there, participants will be taken on a private tour of the Emerson-Wilcox House, home to some of the museum's finest furniture pieces. Saturday, September 13th from noon ~ 2:00 p.m. at the Elizabeth Bishop Perkins Boathouse. $50 includes lecture, lunch, tour and admission to the Antiques Show. Seating is limited. York Art Association: 2008 Fall Show
Members of the York Art Association will exhibit their work in a juried show judged by Mary Harding, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museums of Old York's George Marshall Store Gallery. The Village Gallery exhibits work by more than forty local artists, including founder Gloria Gustafson.
